Artist Statement

MADIHA SAEED IS A LONG ISLAND BASED ARTIST THAT RESIDES IN SMITHTOWN. HER ART FOCUSES ON EVOKING EMOTIONS THAT ONE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO CONVEY THROUGH WORDS. AT A YOUNG AGE, MADIHA OFTEN HAD CONFLICTS WITH HER MENTAL HEALTH, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO FOCUS. CREATING ART PROVIDED SOLACE IN TIMES OF NEED.

MADIHA STARTED HER STUDIES IN FINE ARTS AS A FRESHMAN AT SUNY PURCHASE. AFTER A BRIEF HIATUS TO STUDY AT SUFFOLK COLLEGE, SHE BEGAN DEVELOPING HER VOICE AS AN ARTIST AT STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY, WHERE SHE COMPLETED HER UNDERGRADUATE CAREER AND RECEIVED HER BA IN STUDIO ART AND PSYCHOLOGY IN 2017. WHILE ATTENDING STONY BROOK, SHE CONTINUED EARLIER ARTISTIC PURSUITS IN PRINTMAKING. SHE TOOK MULTIPLE INTAGLIO AND LITHOGRAPHY COURSES, FINDING THE PROCESSES TO BE FASCINATING AND ENJOYING THE EXPERIMENTATION THAT THEY ALLOWED.

MADIHA’S INTEREST IN ABSTRACT, ORGANIC WORK AROSE WHEN SHE DEVELOPED A BACTERIAL INFECTION ON HER HAND DIAGNOSED AS CELLULITIS. ONCE RESEARCHING HOW THE DISEASE LOOKED UNDER A MICROSCOPE, SHE BECAME IN AWE OF THE BEAUTIFUL MICROSCOPIC IMAGERY. MADIHA TOOK THIS INSPIRATION AND SLOWLY STARTED TO CULTIVATE NEW CONCEPTS INTO HER WORK: CREATING IMAGERY THAT FOCUSED ON PAIN, BE IT MENTAL OR PHYSICAL, AND CREATING IMAGERY THAT IS AESTHETICALLY PLEASING TO THE EYE. USING LOOPS AND CIRCLES SYMBOLIC OF PORTALS, SHE OFFERS AN ESCAPE INTO THE UNKNOWN WITH THE HOPES THAT VIEWERS WILL CONNECT THE IMAGERY TO THEIR OWN PERSONAL STORIES.
